I am in my final year of University and am writing a dissertation about anime, specifically Naruto and Bleach (being a fan myself), and am interested in your experiences of these titles as either manga or anime. For example: + How did you first find out about anime/manga, specifically Naruto and Bleach? + Do you watch them regularly? + What is it about them that you enjoy (for example the animation style or the story)? + Do you watch/read a lot of other anime/manga titles as well? + In what way do you interact with the anime, as in do you also draw your own manga or go to cosplay events and conventions? These questions are just general ideas of what I am interested in any reply at all will be incredibly useful. I may potentially be quote any posts made in reply in my dissertation Thankyou to everyone who posts Alex |

I discovered anime early on. I would say 14-15. I was into dragon ball z and sailor moon. I watch them both regularly and as i grew older i kinda just stop watching, I was working and school and etc. My brother actually mentioned naruto to me once as it had come on cartoon network about a year and half ago. I didn't think anything of it, i was extremely busy lol. Well last summer I working at Cedar Point and a marathon came on of the first 100 episodes. I quickly became hooked. When i came home from Cp i began watching naruto daily. Getting dvds from the library and watching it on the internet whenever i had the chance. I've yet seen bleach but I've heard good things about it. One of things i like about naruto, is he seems like a normal person. Their story lines are tragic and just drew me in, well until the fillers anyway. I'm still way to busy and an average drawer to get into doing my own anime. I enjoy both the naruto manga or anime and i hope that helped. |

I read an article about Sasuke in an anime magazine about 3 years ago, and then later that summer, I saw an advertisement on Cartoon Network for Naruto, and I recognized Sasuke and decided to watch it. Now, I'm a mega-Naruto fan. Yay! |

I am just starting to get really interested in NARUTO. My best friend got me hooked when he made me watch some japanese episodes. I slways thought it was gay when i watched the american dubs. Also, i determined that the only reason i stuck around was the fact that Kiba is such a badass. |

I'm hoping you recognize that Naruto and Bleach are not typical of anime in general (if there is such as thing) or really even of the shounen genre in particular. They are both hypoer-popular extremely long-running series that have been in Shounen Jump and went through periods of animated filler material due to their incredible popularity. It is also an assumption to lump the two together. While there are many fans who follow both series there are many who follow only one and Naruto is (or was, I haven't checked the download numbers in years) much more popular than Bleach. As to your specific questions:
I found out about anime in general through watching the DBZ dub when it aired on the networks way back in the 90s and through watching Eva with some buddies after school in high school and then truly delving into things via an anime club in college. I discovered Naruto via an AMV a friend showed me in hmm...2003, watched the anime through what was then availble (about episode 50-ish) and then started reading the manga. I attempted to start watching Bleach in 2005, got through about 8 episodes and decided it wasn't worth my time.
I watched the anime regularly until about the Raiga arc of the fillers, and then stopped. Attempts to start watching against with Shippudden failed miserably, the pacing was awful. I read the manga weekly via scanslation. To answer a question you didn't ask but is probably important: I have spent precisely 0.00 dollars on Naruto material.
Yes, I follow multiple anime titles at a time, usually as they're airing via fansubs, but I may find somewhat older gems I missed the first time around. I don't read as much manga, but I prefer it for certain genres that I feel don't translate as well to the screen (cerain kinds of comedy particularly). I read Claymore and Gantz on a regular basis. Naruto is, of the titles I' currently following, the one that means the least to me and I'm continuing with it only out of some kind of compulsive negative impulse. This doesn't happen often, Code Geass is the only other series to have impelled that particular sort of reaction from me, both series share precipitous declines from their initial quality as major features.
I attended Otakon in 2004, reasons of economics and geography have prevented me from attending other cons since, unfortunately. I write fanfiction (several hundred thousand words and counting), though for the moment only Naruto and Claymore have extruded that from me. |

I discovered Naruto when my (now ex) girlfriend was watching a New Year's Eve marathon on Cartoon Network, with a new episode airing at midnight. I wanted to teach her to play this game I got her, but she decided watching four-and-a-half hours of reruns was a better idea; I got angry, left the house and subsequently severed all communication between us. A time later, my friend at GameStop explained a little about Naruto, I picked up the first manga volume, and fell in love with it. |

During the summer this year, I had a stomach flu, and I was incredible pain. To get my mind off of the pain, I googled manga on my laptop. I found that Naruto was rated in the top 5 on some site. I started reading the manga out of curiosity and I got hooked. I heard Bleach is good, but I haven't read any of it yet. I wasn't much of a manga reader, but Naruto caught my eye, and I liked it. The only anime I actually watched when I was younger was DBZ. Personally Naruto is much better than DBZ. Better animation and story-line. DBZ could have been much better, but it came out in the 80's-90's period so you can't ask for too much. |

In amime ESSPECIALY, DBZ>>>> Naruto. Why? Simple. FILLERS. DBZ Seemlessly threw fillers everywhere, and past fillers & filler characters came back. Yes plot inconsistancies were created, but they were all overlookable. Naruto on the other hand Had a TREMENDOUS block of HORRID fillers never again being referenced, totaly un-integrated. Anime-wise, Naruto as a whole Is sadly lackluster due to the abuse they put us through with the fillers. 80+ episodes with NO PLOT!? Its Horrid! Total Garbage!!!! Its good when its good, but its TRASH when its bad. Well, IMHO at least. |

1 in every 5 episodes you would find a good animated episode. But still there wasn't any real movement of any character if you pay attention. Naruto is way better in my opinion. Even Naruto has its bad episodes too regarding animation. |

Yoru saying Vegeta didnt move? He certainly did. As did piccolo. And of course Goku's simplicity became the Shonen Archtype. And Naruto cant look down on DBZ for animation since nearly EVERY filler was animated by 10 year old girls with Crayons. DBZ shamelessly reused animation, and shamelessly used near frozen pictures where people talked, but once the animators learned how to draw near the end of frieza DBZ took a NOTEABLE upturn in animation that remained a reletivly constant growth till the very end. Naruto, on the other hand Is ALWAYS hit & miss, usualy miss. Ever since we saw the 3rd Hokage fight (or mabey VOTE depending on who you ask), the Animation has stagnated and in fact declined on average. It ****es me off to no end -_- |

Other than that Naruto is my first real manga/anime series. I was introduced to the series through a friend from college who showed me the first episode. Actually, she showed me the first episode of Naruto the Abridged series and was trying to explain what was so funny. She gave up and showed me the real first episode. Which I thought was pretty stupid. Honestly, how in the world does someone who's supposed to be that bad learn an advanced jutsu that fast??? And it was sooo overdramatic. And slow. A few months later during break I decided to watch some more episodes. And the more I watched the more hooked I became. The story line evened out, and became easier to follow. New characters were introduced that were interesting (Sasuke), and I got used to the slower pace. After I got to the end of all the english anime and then the Japanese anime, in a few months, I read through the manga in about two days. I did watch the first episode of Bleach b/c I kept hearing about it along w/ Naruto. It didn't seem that interesting, but maybe someday I'll give it a second shot.
I normally watch Naruto on friday or saturday
For me, I like action, good story lines, and dynamic characters that I can try to figure out. Sasuke is my favorite character, and if it weren't for him I might not have stuck with Naruto through the zabuza arc. In general I find grey characters the most interesting and complex.
Not really. When I was younger I watched Pokemon/Digimon. After I got into naruto I watched the first episode of bleach, the first episode of FMA. and a few episodes of Vampire knight.
I get on this website. Does that count? |

If U go to my profile, it pretty much tells how I found out about anime/manga & why I enjoy them. But my actual 1st exposure was an animated movie I saw on TV as a kid called "Alakazm the Great". I remembered that it was so different from past animated movies I've seen before. It wasn't Disney. About 2 years ago, I saw it on cable & realized that it was an anime featured film & what made it so different was adult leaning topics (as sex/violence). Since watching anime series I sought other anime featured films because of my love of animation. But still a fan of Disney. Naruto & Bleach I discovered on the Cartoon/Network & thru anime magazines & some websites. It was because of their write ups that got me curious to check them out. Bleach I caught during the "Rukia rescue arc" that got my attention & saw it thru the end of that arc. But I came in late in the series & there were too many characters to keep track of (not to mention the plot), I haven't been watching it since the "Rukia rescue arc". Naruto, I wasn't interest in the beginning, because it center around a group of 12 year old ninjas. It was shown earlier than most of the anime on the Cartoon/Network that I thought it was grear toward children. On/off I would watch an episode, but it was not till the Chuunin exam episodes that I became a regular watcher & a fan. The one reason I started to like the series & the manga was because of the character Sasuke. Check some of my posts & U'll see why. Besides the complex characters, evolving plot & twist/turns, I like the soundtracks from these anime. I've large CD collection, even thought I don't understand a word of Japanese. Some are original or adaptation. The best I believed is the music from "the Fullmetal Alchemist", because it fits so well w/ the characters & story. I've collected anime dvds & mangas of my favorites. Naruto is the only continuing series that I still collect in mangas, but I don't collect the DVD. This website is the only one I take part in, again because Naruto is the only continuing favorite. I was attending conventions (lots great pictures of Cosplay) but stop when people were asking me if my kid was enjoying the convention. I don't have any kids. I don't think there's as much enthusiasm in anime as it was 5 years ago. Case in point, on the Cartoon/Network where I discovered anime & my main source for new shows, their programming has been irregular. They rarely introduce a new show. When they do (as the Prince of Tennis), it's drop from the schedule in a few weeks. They again rarely keep old favorites or new shows on a regular schedule. I had looked forward to their Friday & Saturday night anime lineup, but it's not there any more. Robot Chicken, Family Guy & Hillybilly Squid have taken their place. Even other sources as G4TEC (where I discovered Last Exile) has dropped their anime nite. The IFC keeps repeating the same series (Samurai 7/Basilisk). Naruto is about one of the few to keep going, but I don't like these filler-in episodes @ all, except to catch sight of Sasuke. Don't know why the anime enthusiasm has died down. One the best animated TV series concluded recently. It was an original concept specific for TV animation (rare). It had a great continuious/even flowing/evolving plotline, great leading characters (good/evil), great supporting characters (animals, too), great writing & direction, great animation (specially in the conclusion), very little miss-steps & that the creators were able to bring the story in the alloted time as they promised. It had the look of anime, but "Avatar, the Last Airbender" was not. |

Sales documentation actually supports this. It has to do with many factors, particularly downloaded media and the Japanese response to it. Japanese animators have been killed by downloading and by bootlegged Chinese DVDs (worth noting, as expensive as anime is in the US, it actually costs more, in terms of dollars per episode, in Japan). They responded by tailoring the majority of shows towards hyper-niche markets that play towards a certain type of Otaku in Japan who's both willing, and has the money to actually continue to buy DVDs and other merchendise (figures, posters, etc.). This has led to the proliferation of both many low-quality shows, short-term adaptations of manga (ex. Ga-Rei Zero, which is a short adaptation of a shounen manga that, five years ago, would have been made into a massive series), and an abundance of shows that, while they may be good in their own right, hit the US market at something of a cultural tangent (ex. When They Cry, which is essentially a horror parody of the already weird Moe phenomenon). As a niche market, and because of the peculiar massive time delays between airing and American release under the current system, anime has been hit especially hard in the decline in all DVD purchases over the last few years. The industry needs to adapt, and there have been some attempts (Gonzo has experimented with streaming subtitled episodes for a fee and marginal series are now being released without dubbing as a cost-cutting effort) but it's not there yet. At present, anime purchases in the US are essentially fans donating their money to an industry for a product they already have, which is not a functional business model. |

Well, it was long story but to make it shorter I started watching anime when I was in 9th grade. I started watching it in grades before that but I started getting into anime more. Actually, I just got into Bleach last year. I didn't like it before but now its one of my favorites.
No not really but I talk about almost regularly....
Definetly the animation.

I started to learn about Naruto when I read about it in this one Beckett magazine and started to get interested. Then, I saw it on Cartoon Network on Toonami. I wanted to watch more and I watched Naruto monthly. Soon, Toonami Jetstream came out and I was hooked [I still go on Toonami Jetstream]. I have Naruto as a screensaver now. For a good alternative in manga or anime, I suggest death note. ^_^ It will be your doom!!! Edited by Hattori Hanzo, Nov 14 2008, 11:16 PM.

How did you first find out about anime/manga, specifically Naruto and Bleach? I got into anime as a kid (early 90's), I think the first series was G-Force (Gatchaman in Japanese), later on DBZ and Sailor Moon. Obsession started there and only intensified over time (won't list all the series I've seen its too long). I got into Naruto in high school (10th grade I think), though I initially avoided it because I thought it was a kid series. But I heard people in my class talking about it and I happened to come across an episode one day as I was flipping channels. I was interested, I saw some more episodes on tv, and I was hooked. I'm not a Bleach fan, though. Do you watch them regularly? Yes. What is it about them that you enjoy (for example the animation style or the story)? The storyline and characters are the most important thing to me in any series, I like being drawn in to the story and complex characters are a big plus to it. Do you watch/read a lot of other anime/manga titles as well? Yes. Mainly Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist. I watch most series, I don't read manga often. In what way do you interact with the anime, as in do you also draw your own manga or go to cosplay events and conventions? I can't draw. I do write fanfictions though and I have been to two conventions (Otakon 2007+2008) and cosplayed both times. Edited by windseeker15, Nov 19 2008, 04:06 PM.
