Madara doesn't throw a hissyfit when Konoha is founded. Leaf remains incredibly stable with little internal troubles thanks to the Uchiha Clan not trying to stir things up. Events like the sand/sound invasion are defeated decisively and others such as the Kyuubi attack probably don't happen at all. A powerful renegade organisation might still exist but without Madara's guiding hand who knows how it would operate; would Pain even be a factor?

Basically the entire plot changes.
I see where you went with it. hahaha. Actually if a creature as strong as the ninetails wasn't placed into Naruto in the first place then the power levels would be lower and the God mode ninjas wouldn't be around. But it's a manga based on power moves, so it's inevitable that it would go in the same direction.

if i could change one thing i would change how the power levels have increased.

we went from the sarutobi vs oro fight being pretty much the peak of ninja fighting ability to pain being able to blow kohona off the map single handedly.

i liked things better when the ninja didn't have such insane power levels like in DBZ.

when they said that kyuubi could wipe out a forest with its tail and yet the 4th somehow defeated it you knew ninja would eventually be insanely powerful. i would also change the bijuu so they weren't so powerful.

Generally all of my Naruto fanfiction is an exploration of this concept to one degree of other, so there's something close to 500,000 words laying around to said effect. Most pointedly, Sky's Arrow's is implicitly a discussion of the following scenario: what if Hidden Cloud had gotten off its but and done something about the Akatsuki after Konan was kidnapped. The short version is the Akatsuki get their collective heads handed to them. I maintain that, while rushed I handled things a lot better than Kishimoto so far, and my version of the blue-haired member is ten times more interesting useful than Konan will ever be (and how I wish that wasn't true, you have no idea).

Ultimately, the Naruto plotline is driven almost entirely by its characters. If the specific series of events that happen to about a half-dozen essential people (Naruto, Sasuke, Orochimaru, Madara, Pain, Jiraiya, maybe a few others) do not occur precisely as they do then the entire series falls to pieces. Though larger socio-economic forces are often referenced (Pain is the most obvious recent case, but there was the Sand case, Kimmimaro, and several others), they are in fact continuously trumped by abjectly personal actions, motives, and ideals (which, given the current power scaling they very well should be, it just means the world makes no sense). So really, you can write a novel based on changing one significant event for any major character, and in fact for most of the minor ones (speaking as the guy who wrote 185,000 words based on what if somebody not from konoha saved Neji's hide while he had those big holes in him and not the Leaf medics).

Changing the power levels generally means the Biju's levels and how the compare to ninja's power levels would be included, I think.

I think you mean "Yugito," Mechalich.

As for what I'd change, I think I've come up with something that's feasible (for now)...

Orochimaru getting his arms sealed.

Without sealed arms, Orochimaru doesn't immediately call off the Oto-Suna Invasion, resulting in the Leaf Village being obscenely devastated. Despite very heavy losses, the Leaf manages to survive, but the chances of rebuilding even gradually are dim due to the sheer destruction and the massive casualties. Because of this, not only does the Council insist Jiraiya become Hokage, as they do not believe his words that Tsunade is better for the job, owing that she left Leaf on stiff terms and has gained ill repute as a very bad gambler with massive debts, which could greatly tarnish what little image Leaf has left.

Going after Tsunade, Jiraiya still has to fight off Itachi and Kisame, but that's just a side note...

Finding Tsunade and Shizune, he learns that Orochimaru had already found them, and given them an ultimatum: Keep out of matters entirely or wake up dead. Jiraiya is barely able to convince Tsunade that Orochimaru would eventually decide to kill her anyway to tie up a loose end, and they make like hell back for Leaf.

Back at Leaf, Tsunade does what she can to heal the afflicted, including Sasuke being brought out of Itachi's Tsukuyomi aftermath. While Jiraiya and the Council argue about the course of action to take (maintain appearances and prepare a counterattack on Orochimaru or just rebuild until they can safely retaliate), Sasuke and Naruto intensify their rivalry to the point of Sasuke still leaving the village, especially pissed that a schmuck like Naruto not only has picked up skills to match his own, but that he is now officially the Hokage's apprentice, a prestigious post for a school failure.

The Sound Ninja Four still ignore the obvious retcon of the sensor dome barrier, and Sasuke accepts even easier than he does in canon. By the time the Team Seven boys throw down at the Valley of the End, Sasuke is even more bloodthirsty towards Naruto, and damn near succeeds in killing him before (as in canon) deciding he doesn't want to be a complete clone of Itachi and heads to Oto.

Unfortunately, Orochimaru is in perfectly healthy condition, and decides to take the boy's exhausted and untrained body, successfully obtaining a Sharingan. With this, he begins copying jutsu at a frightening rate, vastly bolstering his already hearty arsenal.

As time goes on, Leaf has recovered with the help of Suna and sheer determination to the point of being mid-level in power, but still a far cry from their previous lofty status. Akatsuki still nabs the Ichibi and Gaara is still saved, but the idea of going after Orochimaru's spy, which brings with it the chance of encountering the man himself, does not bode well.

The meet is still held, and Orochimaru uses the Sharingan to crushing effect, handing the Kyuubi its head even though he's not able to kill it. The crazy "the double cross is really a triple cross!" plot still happens, but with a more horrific revelation: Sasuke doesn't exist anymore; there's only Orochimaru.

With that news in mind, Leaf has to contend with a Sharingan-equipped madman the likes of which hasn't existed in previous memory. More bad news coming in: Orochimaru, emboldened by his Sharingan, begins actively hunting the Akatsuki himself in addition to letting the Leaf chase them, wanting to double his odds of success. Hidan and Kakuzu are taken out as a result.

From there, Orochimaru aims for Itachi, wanting to settle their old score. Leaf again dispatches the usual heroes, but by the time they track down Itachi, all that's left is his and Kisame's corpses, more victims of Orochimaru, who then turns his attention to the rest of the Akatsuki...

What I never really liked about part one was how both Orochimaru and Itachi basically gambled with Sasuke. They both want him alive, especially Orochimaru. They seemed sure that he would survive everything and of course he did. But if you think about it, they plans for him could have failed so easily. Both battles with Zabuza, the Chuunin exams and especially the cursed seal. He had a 50% chance to survive the seal.
So what I would change is Sasuke dying because of the cursed seal. Not as drastic as Chuffy's idea (which I like btw) but still a lot of things would be different now.

Another one: Danzou is chosen as the Third Hokage instead of Hiruzen. While this might not seem to change much at first glance, a significant plot difference would be Konoha's overall disposition. With this, the village becomes much more similar to the other ones in the Five Great Shinobi Countries, with less emphasis on the amicable ideals of Sarutobi and instead something more merciless. "Root" alone being a representation of Danzou's reign is now unnecessary, as Konoha itself is such. Even characters such as the goody-goody rookies would be raised differently, possibly instilling a more brutal nature in the way they fight, the way they think, the way they act. The entire series would perhaps be given a darker tone and stay truer to the concept of what a shinobi is supposed to be. It could admittedly qualify as something along the lines of a Seinen manga rather than a Shounen one.

This isn't to say everyone would have a personality change though, since even during those years some shinobi aspired for peace.

Not to be rude at all or anything but isnt this very similar to the thread Regrets? Not the same title but basically the same thing is to tell what you didnt like and what you would change

Is there anything in the series that you wish didn't happen. Like you would redo it if you could (but you can't, duh)

Back on Topic:
I would most definitely have changed probably the beginning of the story where sasuke survives haku attack. When i first watched this in the anime I thought wow way to kill a main character and I was kind of thinking at the same time well who would actually miss him. Now that I think about it I think it would have been the best way to kill him of and he would die some what of a hero and not go through the events that have already unfolded, but considering this event was changed alot of things would also change.

  • Naruto wouldnt have a rival to beat so maybe wouldnt train as hard and not be as powerful as he is today or have the motivation for it
  • Itachi role would also be downplayed and probably because sasuke is gone cant fufill his plans of having him kill him and maybe goes insane and becomes a true villain
  • Orochimaru wouldnt appear apart of the story as much and would drastically different plans maybe to even take naruto body
  • Naruto might not have passed the second part of the chuunin exam
  • Sakura wouldnt have anyone to crush on and maybe actually develop some real skills early before the time skip
  • The team might not even have entered the chuunin exam
  • Kakashi without sasuke being around would be able to train naruto more

The purpose of this thread, which some people aren't getting, is how ONE event would affect the rest of the series. Alternate realities, essentially. Example, Itachi refuses to sacrifice his clan. The Uchiha overrun Konoha and the resulting civil war puts them in control and Danzou, Koharu, Homura and Sarutobi are killed. Orochimaru, with a huge supply of Sharingan eyes, is never uncovered by the now-dead Sarutobi and continues his research uninterrupted. Without Itachi or Orochimaru in Akatsuki, Deidara is never forced to join either. Kabuto is still found at Bellflower Pass and eventually comes into contact with Orochimaru. His memory block is removed and the two join, speeding up Orochimaru's research. The two disappear as Orochimaru sets out to accomplish his goal of transhumanism through absorbing all the jutsu he can. Hidden Sound is never formed. The "natural" Kyuubi attack occurs and in the nick of time, Madara shows up to subdue it and is welcomed back by his clan as a hero.

I never said your thread was the same as the thread regrets I said "they were very similar" only difference being this domino effect of which you want to discuss. I just thought it would be better suited in that thread but I guess it deserves it own thread since it goes more into it than just what we wish didnt happen.

To go into more detail about my previous post:

Sasuke dies at the hands of haku during the zabuza arc and the rest of team 7 return to the village with the mission successful. Because of this the alternate reality Naruto Universe 2 is created:

1) Team 7 continues to do missions, but naruto doesnt have as strong of drive as before to become stronger due to sasuke death

2) The group enters the chuunin exam with only two members (or adding another partner less ninja to squad)

3) During the third exam they are attacked by orochimaru who wants to use naruto body as host of his soul and are able to escape afterwords they defeat the rain village ninja and pass to the next qualifying matches

4) Naruto defeats kiba in his match, kabuto remains in the match and defeats his partner

5) Gaara is put up against kabuto for final round of chuunin exam everyone else order is the same

6) Naruto defeats neji and faces of against Gaara (Kabuto throws the match to Gaara as is planned) during semi-finals in which he is able to defeat him

7) During the battle the attack begins but is soon calmed down after Gaara is defeated and the sand retreat and Orochimaru is unable to kill third and with the sand retreat is blocked from an escape and killed

8) Shikamaru and Naruto both get promoted for their excellent skills and abilities

9) Itachi now become insane since his brother death and now having no love for konoha either tries to capture Naruto this time with Kisame and are able to defeat and kill Jiraiya and capture Naruto

10) All of the bijuu have been captured and extracted and Ataksuki uses them to finalize there goals and truly are able to take over the world.

I would also change things which happend in time skip
naruto training - jiraiya should teache him futon (maybe also a second element), few more elemental jutsu, summoning that stomachfrog, at least told him about senjutsu and natural energy so naruto could start slowly learning that. or learn him to control kyuubi at least up to 4-5tails
so after 3years naruto would be at least close to sasuke`s growth

what will probably change:
all naruto`s fights until pain
and jiraiya wouldn`t look like incapability teacher

I saw some flaws with other peoples alternate time lines:

@Konan (liked yours only saw one flaw in it)
Quote:

He had no reason to go after her if his hands werent hurt. She had no idea that the village or that sarutobi was dead so she wasnt even knowing of these events so wasnt going to oppose him.

@Jashin (even if it was just example)
Quote:

Kabuto would only have that memory block if he was at Sasori at one time meaning Sasori wouldn't have let his subordinate leave since Orochimaru never joined Ataksuki then left so they would never meet probably.

@Fictionreader98 (thought it was definitely well thought out and good story with little to no flaws)

He then leaves them disappearing into the countryside, lost to all sides.
It just doesnt seem in character of sasuke to say things such as this.

@Badkent (I just found none of it plausible)

I would have liked to see Sasuke actually grow up with Naruto and continue to push each other to the point where both of them would have achieve the levels they are at right now in a much shorter time frame.

The reason that they both achieved the level they are is because of their determination to achieve their goals naruto was to defeat sasuke and sasuke to kill his brother and after he left naruto was to bring sasuke back. So if none of this happened im pretty sure that they would be weaker and not stronger since they wouldn't have the drive anymore to achieve this level.

@strawrange (liked it but thought that senjutsu was introduced at the right time and if introduced earlier naruto would go chasing after sasuke again)
Quote:

Then Naruto would join him along with a few others.
Jiraiya has been shown to be somewhat of a solo guy he wouldnt bring anyone but maybe naruto along and if only he knew naruto was ready and if he knew he was going to fight, so as naruto didnt blow his cover.

@dnlsalamanca (didnt like it at all couldnt see it happening in anyway)
Quote:

But Naruto escapes When he learns about akaski and the bijuu thing.

I dont believe we know exactly when it was ever stated that Orochimaru left the organization so he could have still been apart when he joined him. Also the whole mizuki working for Orochimaru was only stated in a filler of Naruto so shouldnt be taken at face value.

@Cartoon-man (I would love for naruto to get more jutsu and it would change many of his fights if he had gotten it, only problem I see is your idea isnt totally thought out)

@Lunacy Divine (liked the ideas i would also like to hear what you believe what would happen because of these changes)

@Chuffy (thought it would be a nice change but saw some flaws)

@Syndacite (loved it have nothing else to say is praise for highwind for coming up with the plot didnt see any flaws with it; i can see what you mean about the vizard thing though)

@Mechalich (would like to read any of your stories you made surrounding this series)

I know my own stories had its own flaws and I can recognize them also such as the fact in my alternate time line that orochimaru is after naruto for his own body. Just wanted to point at what I thought were flaws in these changes.

Half of the point I was making with my segment was to radically change Sasuke's character from what he is currently in canon to something I hoped would be viewed more acceptable by the audience. By adding the factors of his defeat to a sick weaken Orochimaru, being lost and alone without direction and Naruto's words during the ending fight sequenced, I tried to show that all of these factors had an enermous impact him. But at the same time, there is no denying that he did committ treason and that realistically the Leaf shouldn't just let him rejoin with a slap of the wrist. The idea that he had to go out and discover himself was to show that dispute the factors mentioned already, he still doesn't know what to do with his life right now, showing that he still needs to grow and find his path again, and while it seems likely he would choose the right path, there's still the possibility that he would go wrong again. Overall point is that he would be quite different from his canoncounterpart and more likeable, while at the same time not having the story so focused on him by writing him out of the story for a time.

Well, hope that makes sense to you (Just as I hope that answer isn't going off topic since I was explaining the actions of the changes made)

Still, if you feel that it's still out of character for Sasuke, well to each their own then. I thought it was rather becoming myself.

If nothing else, thanks for the compliment about my segment.

I suppose I would change the sharingan and never let it evolve into ms or ems. This would probably have kept the manga more realistic without need of adding all the new stupid over-powered non-sense that's taken away from the realism. I liked the power levels the way they were up until Itachi came to town. Everything was hitting on all cylinders up to that point. Naruto and Sasuke and the rest of the gang could've had a more realistic time maturing and powering-up and more characters would get time to shine because not only a handful of characters would be godlike (Madara, Pain, Itachi, Naruto and Sasuke, etc.) while others were simply in the way (all of Konoha except Naruto, according to this last arc). Everyone could still have value. Things just became so rushed and unbalanced to meet the whole timetable of Sasuke beating Orochimaru before getting his body stolen so he could go and take on the godly Itachi. Ruined everything, imho.

The one event I would change would be when team 7 survived the Chuunin exam & were going into preliminary rounds for downsizing the applicants. Sasuke was in great pain from the cursed seal that Sakura so worry about him, she was about to disqualified her team. He angrily/forcefully stop her & had sharp words for her. Naruto came to her defense, but Sasuke explained he had to fight the strongest & that meant Naruto, too. This shock & later made Naruto happy.
Up to that time, Naruto saw Sasuke as a fierce rivial. Especially when it came to Saukra, even if there was no riviarly for her, as far as Sasuke was concerned. Even when teaming together. Working well as a team those few times. Even when Sasuke save him from Haku's needles. But to have Sasuke recognize him as one of the strongest, Naruto began to see Sasuke not only as a rivial but a comrade & a friend. The 1st person to see him as a worthly human being. Sure Iruka & the 3rd Hokage saw him more than the unfortunate Jinchuuriki, Sasuke @ that time didn't know of Naruto/Kyuubi. & wasn't judging him by that.
So, just as Sasuke is about to tell Naruto about wanting to fight him, he's either interrupted by Saskura again or the instructors who want start the rounds immediately. Leaving Naruto angry @ Sasuke for yelling @ Sakura & more determine to be Sasuke's better.
After Itachi defeats Kakashi/Sasuke, he seeks Tsunade's help for Kakashi & as long she's there, help Sasuke. The fight on the roof is more intense. Especialy the battle in the valley. Because Naruto sees Sasuke as a traitor & won't let him betray the Konoha. But Sasuke prevails & doesn't kill him for the same reason as before. Naruto still doesn't listened to Jiraiya's advice to forget Sasuke. Because he won't let the traitor get away & he wants a rematch, he wants to win this time.
Instead of the friendship Naruto thought could've been, his resentment of Sasuke grows stronger. To be the strongest & the next Hokage, his goal is to bring in the traitor. Naruto's good-nature will disappear whenever he thinks of Sasuke.
Much doesn't change in his training to get stronger, but it'll be more intense. It could change his relationship w/ Sakura, because his thoughts are fierce in bringing Sasuke down & for punishment. Not sure how'll it would effect his other friendships. But their next match would end up their final. The possible death of either. But it could still end up that way.

Konan suggested that Orochimaru searched for Tsunade to ensure that she would keep out of his affairs. It's not really a flaw considering it's a suitable countermeasure; she's of the Sannin, so obviously she's on par with Orochimaru, and if Jiraiya was to find her as Konan suggested, then obviously it was a needed countermeasure.

Quote:

Since pain told Itachi to go get him to join that might mean that someone else goes and forces him to join

And since they don't have the Sharingan it doesn't go as smoothly as it really went. Either they retreat or some people are getting blown up.

Kabuto's memory block was put on him prior to Orochimaru ever meeting him, if I remember correctly. This means that Orochimaru probably picked him up on his own accord, and the same situation could have played out. Besides, Sasori had spies in several places, even if Orochimaru never joined Akatsuki he'd still be viewed as a threat by them, and since he had his own agenda they'd likely want to keep tabs on him.

We've seen that the drive to defeat a rival has the ability to drastically up one's abilities. Naruto went from being a sub-par Genin to a fairly capable Chuunin-level ninja in about a year due to his desire to defeat Sasuke. Madara and Izuna are prime examples of how a rivalry can facilitate rapid skill growth.

I'm sure Naruto could influence him and get him to bring along a few others as well. It's not really a stretch.

Madara stirred things up by making a grab at the thrown. Had he not tried to overthrow Hashirama's control, they'd have no particular reason to be suspicious of Uchiha, so they would be much more stable and powerful, considering they'd have the entire Uchiha clan as well as Itachi on their side.

Quote:

The organization might not be founded or would have very different goals and since pain was being controlled by madara might not have even been founded.

Chuffy actually included something like this in his post.

Really most of the things you pointed out weren't flaws. The very idea that flaws could exist in these alterations is kind of absurd; these are alternate realities, and since things wouldn't go down as we know it, who's to say what would have really happened in these situations?

The thing I would change is the ending of the Sasuke/Killer Bee fight. I would not have Killer Bee transform into his tailed form (the actual demon, not the chakra shroud) and would have him kill Sasuke. Not because I dislike the Uchiha, but because of what I feel would happen. With Sasuke dead, the other members of Hawk would either attempt revenge and be defeated or run away. Either way, the Raikage would see that Sasuke is from a (former) Leaf village clan and has joined an organization that has already killed an important solider of the Cloud village, and has attempted to kill another, not to mention his own brother. Instead of wanting a summit with the Kages, the Raikage will give the Leaf an ultimatum: help them finish off Sasuke and the Akatsuki, or face a war. While the leaf is perfectly willing to try and stop Akatsuki, they (meaning Tsunade and Naruto) are not willing to stop Sasuke. So, the Cloud decides to try and force the Leaf to help, militarily. Madara gets word of this and, as the Mizukage, tells the Mist village to aid the Cloud. During the battles, Madara sends Pain in to try and capture Naruto. The Leaf forces are so busy trying to stop the invaders that they cannot aid Naruto against Pain (Not that they helped anyways). Pain manages to beat Naruto and takes him back for extraction and the Leaf has to make a choice: stop the invaders or send a group to get Naruto back and possibly leave the village weakened.

Sorry if this is a little bit of a bad theory. I kind of thought of this right before I went to bed.

I guess maybe flaw is to strong of a word for those situations I pointed out since these are alternate time lines anything could happen in them. What I was trying to do was point out most plausible ones I believed and show others some minor alterations they could do to make their story make more sense. Although you are right any of these situations could have happened and hard to argue with events that never unfolded, I will give you that my use of the word flaw can be replaced by the word of opinion of the what I saw as flaws. Like someone stated earlier Naruto the manga is a character driven manga and all of their personalities make what the manga is. What I thought was most of the characters in these situations wouldn't act in this way or these events could still happen in some way that would need more detail.

The plausibility of hypotheticals based on Naruto is extremely difficult to gauge because of the fact I mentioned above: character-driven plot.

To detail, everything that happens in Naruto happens because someone, some specific person, made a personal choice, and events followed from this. While Kishimoto has often claimed there are impersonal forces at work, particularly in the form of words put into Pain's mouth this is largely hogwash. The only real impersonal force at work is that ninja have superhuman powers that other people don't have and this creates resentment. Unfortunately, though Kishimoto has made a lot of this, his own acts of power-scaling have also rendered it largely irrelevant. Complaining about ninja brutality is a lot like complaining about Goku wrecking the nearby mountainside in his latest dust up with Vegetta: complain all you want, it's the chirping of insects to the gods above (this is not X-men, there are no Sentinels, no high-powered rifles, no tanks).

If you try to run Naruto with impersonal forces, and I have some experience in writing fanfiction with this tilt, you have to change the world tremendously and make a whole lot of stuff up whole cloth. What you end up with is a world that actually functions better than the one Kishimoto has designed, but in which Konoha, and all of the ninja from it who represent the vast bulk of the series characters, no longer fits at all. This hits to the central problem of the series as a whole: the world is designed to carry an epic, the themes and characters are picture-perfect shounen. As a result, the storyline that follows from this is continually at war with itself. This is also why the Wave arc, which exists in a sort of nebulous alternate reality where there is no epic component (do to the windfall of those elements simply not yet being introduced) is the very best part of the series.

On the other hand this does mean you can write some pretty good what-if alternate stories within the Naruto universe (just like you can in the Marvel universe it ofttimes resembles which has been rewritten I don't know, a dozen or so time officially?) because the characters can literally be lifted whole cloth and plugged into a different tale. Find any moment in the 400+ chapters were something coin-flip random happened. Flip it another way, the resulting universe is equally plausible.

If I could change one event in Naruto, I would alter the team line up and replace Sakura with Hinata. So Team Kakashi would be Naruto-Hinata-Sasuke and Team Kurenai would be Kiba-Shino-Sakura. This way Hinata would be a main character and we would get to see the Byakugan in battle more often. Also Naruto wouldn't get slugged all the time since he would rarely be around Sakura. Hinata would likely be inclined to grow stronger to impress Naruto and since he's on her team she will likely not give up as easily as she did before the chunin exam. She could also POLITELY explain things to Naruto that he doesn't get and since she'd be around him a lot she would likely feel more confident around him.

But I guess in the end it's all just wishful thinking. I't just one thing I would change.

would have diffentely kept zabuza and haku a lot longer and have oro and the sound village in the story tell the end of part 2 of naruto. Seeing the members of akatsuki and what they can do plus thier back story i would have introduce them later on like in part 3 of naruto (if there going to be one) just so konoha's rookie eight, team taka (all grown up) and the sand sib's (Also all grown up) could put up a good decent fight with out any plot holes.
