So we have heard many vocalist in heavy metals bands using screaming as part of their singing. When they screamed, I couldn't even know what they are saying unless I go through the lyrics. So what do you guys think about screaming? I find it cool in some vocalist that uses screaming such as Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and Matt Tuck (Bullet For My Valentine).

Vocalists who screams in low pitch sucks. I prefer Thrash style screaming like one used by Tom Araya(Slayer), Phil Anselmo(Pantera) and James Hetfield in Kill 'em All. Or a higher pitch scream like ones used by Black Metal vocalists and Chuck Schuldiner(Death) is better.

Somehow I'm still amazed at Angela Gossow's growling technique. I thought at first the vocalist of Arch Enemy is a guy then my friend stated that it's a woman. Very rare to find woman in heavy metal band.

A few other female scream vocalists from two very different styles. The first being a mixture of metalcore and deathcore. The one bellow whom sings in a melodeath/Black Metal style.

I used to know a japanese female vocalist whom has played in several local Japanese death metal bands in her area. Haven't talked to her in a while, but it she was very good at what she does and could out scream and put any male vocalist to shame.

But there are plenty of women into Heavy Metal and play it.

Apparently from what I heard she will going to Berklee to continue to her career in music so I expect to see good things from her in the future.

But to keep things on topic.

Screaming vocals don't really bother me at and they are equally as difficult as singing because the technique involved with doing them is fairly difficult and demanding. However one thing I would like to address now for anybody on this forum that wants to do these vocals someday for a band.

This is from my own personal experience when learning them as well as any other vocal style.

Never EVER scream from your throat. Always scream from your chest or stomach. Unless you want to end up with throat surgery or permanently screwing your voice up like M. Shadows, or several other screamers.

Also do not scream if you are sick or are congested in anyway. Unless you want to sound like George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher when you talk normally.

Also always drink plenty of lukewarm, and warm herbal teas, drinking + soda is bad, and so are cigarettes. Also learning how to sing helps as well, because most people whom can scream are also good singers as well and the techniques you learn from proper singing help out as well.

((Also the first vocalist in Arch Enemy was a guy. Then Angela replaced him and has been on all the other albums since then.))

M. Shadows nowadays more or less can scream and yeah I knew about the Arch Enemy's first singer was a guy.

Nevertheless, I used to hate screaming vocals but I found out that sometime it's kind of cool if you can do it but no matter how I look at the guide on how to scream, I still don't get quite the idea how to properly scream without using your throat. They say something about from the stomach but heck I don't know how to do it.

While I like some screaming, I do hate some other types of screaming like the one from Cradle of Filth. Man, I don't even know what he's saying other than blabbering nonsense.
