Review I'm kind of disappointed by the visuals in this episode. Rong/Ishida do show they're capable of recreating decent artwork (though at the cost of terrible animation) and producing sharp and vivid colors, but nearly everything in Madara's flashback consisted of still shots. A fairly large chunk of it wasn't actually animated, including one of my favorite manga spreads. It actually felt more like a slideshow than an anime episode; I really don't think Pierrot gave Madara's flashback sequences the justice they deserved in terms of appearance. It's a shame. On the plus side, there's a good amount of story material incorporated into this episode. It helped to establish Madara's personality and provide him with character depth -- he's shown to be a once-proud leader who eventually developed into a lone, bitter, vengeful man due to the feelings of betrayal brought by his own clan, but he also seems to be very calculating and manipulative as evidenced by the minor discrepancies and possible half-truths brought by his story (an example being his claim that the Kyuubi attack was a natural disaster). It certainly makes him an interesting villain, which is actually rather refreshing for an Uchiha antagonist. In addition, there's a lot of emphasis on Konoha's history throughout the years along with its connection to the Uchiha clan; Kishimoto supplies a plethora of information here, ranging from the Second Hokage's actions in protecting Konoha's stability to Third Hokage Sarutobi's struggle with the other village elders as Itachi was forced to make some pivotal decision. If nothing else, the storyline this week does contain several points of interest. Overall, another good episode. It assuredly has some of the most interesting and thought-provoking plot points to ever surface in Shippuuden, unfortunately the lack of good animation is a major letdown. 7/10, almost an 8.

Why so serious, Shichirou? Posts: 1,990 Group: Member Member #14,093 Joined: July 7, 2008	I was extremely angry they didn't animate the madara vs hashirama fight. Incidentally, who is that young kid who sasuke greets in the preview of the next episode? Also, this didn't have an omake, did it?

If you are wondering whether they showed the fight in the episode, yes they did. But they just a few still, nothing more. It a massacre of one of the most anticipated scene.

The episode was quite decent, outlining Madara's character and explaining the plot some more. That's for the pacing and story part; the animation part was super disappointing. When I saw they didn't animate the Hashirama/Kyuubi/Madara fight, I was like "Oh well, that probably cost too much money for what they consider an in-between-episode?" True, those current episodes don't actually provide action or major plot twists, but they do circle around rather important plot elements. Some more effort and money on the animation wouldn't have killed them. 6.5/10

If I did not know any better I would say that Madara planted the seed of dought in the Uchiha clan. If he would of kept his trap shut the village would not of sespected them being behind the 9 Tails attack. I was not a big fan of the slideshow. It would not have been the worst thing in the world to animate it. For some reason this feels like it is taking too long and I just want a faster pace. Next week looks ok but I am not getting my hopes up.

The good part of the episode was the amount of information gathered. Hopefully, next episode will be better in the animation department

But they got throu it and now its done and over with and they can move on to the fight I've been waiting too see....

I don't know Lunacy, I'm usually 100% in agreement with your takes on the anime but I found this episode pretty impressive. The stillshots to me worked well because they were in the "spirit of a flashback".....snapshots of history. As of late, the studio has really been stepping up their animation game. The colors were vivid, and I thought the animation (though you could argue it was almost a stillshot) of the 1st Hokage was perfect. I just hope that the animation continues to be put out at this level of quality. 9/10

What happened to the Senju Clan is one of those things that's on the list of unanswered mysteries.

I liked seeing flashbacks with the First Hokage, Second Hokage and Uchiha Madara. For the most part I had no problems with the way the flashbacks were portrayed in this episode. I thought it went well with the story Madara was telling. My only issue was the scene that showed Madara and the First Hokage doing battle. I would have loved to see that done better because of its significance. In my opinion Madara's story has also given some back story to his character. As already mentioned he was once the leader of the Uchiha Clan but due to them and everyone else turning their back on him he became bitter and vengeful towards them. This along with the rest of his past gives explanation as to why he is the man he is today. As fans we now have a better understanding of his character. Overall this was quite an informative episode. Not only did we learn of the history of the Hidden Leaf Village but we also found out that the higher ups of the village were the ones who ordered Itachi to massacre the Uchiha Clan. We also got an opposing view on how Madara gained his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. From the way Itachi made it sound Madara literally stole his younger brothers' eyes. Yet, according to Madara his brother offered him his eyes. Episode gets an 8.

Two examples: There's hardly any animation of Madara or Hashirama in the infamous VOTE battle, though at the same time we can clearly see pebbles moving quite fast in front of their faces; there's also the three Uchiha traitors being shown at a complete standstill in what appears to be a snapshot of remembrance... until we see their pupils move at the last second. There's probably more. This certainly doesn't give off the impression it was meant to be a "history slideshow" so much as an unintentional one due to subpar animation. It seems superficial, almost as if Pierrot couldn't decide which direction they wanted to take the flashbacks. Don't get me wrong though, I don't think Rong/Ishida are actually that bad at all (if only for the fact their artwork appears fairly superb to me) and they've done an excellent job of recreating Kishimoto's drawings in this episode.

You know, I went back and looked at some of those still shot animated scenes and then to the actual manga chapter. It does look as if they literally traced over the chapter and animated the background and the character's hair blowing (VOTE battle). I do see your point...animating that way is a little subpar.......and kind of lazy too.
