Numerous random Leaf ninja mooks and Kosuke mill around: "Inoichi, Chouza and Shikaku, you guys are so great!"

Meanwhile, across the village Orochimaru is apparently killing the Third.

It's unclear where that scene happens in the timeline, but somehow I think that bit of filler makes them seem like idiots for either chilling while there are still Sand/Sound enemies about, or being so glib after finding out the Third died.

Things I did like about the episode though were hints for later, manga spoilers:

It was ok. Though I did feel the disconnect because it was supposed to have happened during one of the darkest times in Konohas history and these guys where celebrating so much after suffering major casualties. The password from the Third did make me curious to what the meaning is.

i dont like fillers this anime beter just finish this filler coz its wayyyyyy behind from the manga about more than 1 years behind now. i only watch them just to see the next episode preview to see if the filler has finished. just get on with the war already. naruto anime is losing fans because the anime spams its watchers with fillers, instead of puting instead of putting meaningless fillers I wouldve liked it if they made the fights from the manga to anime more longer and epic. the manga is getting more fans but the anime is losing its fans. If i was masashi kisimoto i would fire the naruto anime producers.

^Just so you know, Kishimoto has no command over Studio Pierrot nor its animation teams.

Yeah, and then there was Hinata and Kurenai naked in another recent filler. I wonder if that's their way of trying to keep their viewers, haha! :D

Good point. They were all standing around and cheering while the village was presumably being destroyed. I wonder if that particular part took place after the enemies retreated.

Not one of the better fillers, but far from the worst. I find Kosuke an interesting character, as his presence points out that genin as a rank isn't merely a stair step—it can be a plateau depending on the person. During the first part of the chuunin exams—definitely in the manga, but I think I saw it in the anime too—there is a guy in the background with a Konoha hitai-ate who has a very full mustache and is obviously older than thirty, but it's only that one time, he never speaks, and we never see him again. Indeed, most genin we see are young kids, and the reason is obvious, but it doesn't explore the fact that there must be adult genin, and there must be a lot of them. Because if there weren't, a biannual event like the chuunin exams wouldn't be such a spectator sport and it certainly wouldn't have been such a big deal for three rookie teams to be participating. It was made clear that it's not easy to be promoted to chuunin, so there have to be genin of all ages floating around. Kosuke is a curious reminder of that.

The beginning of this episode makes me feel sorry for Inoichi while I simultaneously laugh. Of course, it was awesome to see the previous Ino-Shika-Cho show their stuff. It was good to see the kids come down a notch and be realistic about their abilities. Because really, it's easy to look at one's own parent and say, "That's just Dad," and take him for granted because that's all one has ever known; it's harder to hear about everything else he can do and recognize how much one has left to learn. A nice moment of growth for the young trio, and indeed a good setup for the upcoming stuff.

Well, I agree with the idiots part, but I always figured that the Third's death was kept as hush-hush as possible for the sake of the village and morale in general (although I'd expect rumors would have been everywhere . . .).

I thought about that myself. Considering that leaves don't dance unless they're disturbed by something, I figured this: leaves = Konoha shinobi; dancing in the air = fighting; too early in the season = no clear signs of war/no proof of an invasion (a.k.a., "I have a hunch . . .") So, in full, the "translation" could be, There is no guarantee anything will happen, but be prepared to fight. This, however, seems a bit general and not something that one would expect would be limited to a couple of clans.

Another possible, and I feel more likely, option could be, There's suspicious movement—keep your eyes open. This also seems general at first glance, but it's not unreasonable to think that Inoichi, in particular, would have a technique that would allow him to get into others' heads from a distance without them realizing it. Shikaku may have a similar shadow technique. Chouza would be their backup if things went bad.

First of all, like Twilight_Ninja said, Kishimoto has no control over what Pierrot does beyond, perhaps, the introduction of new concepts not covered in the manga. Second, the reason there are fillers tends to be because of one major media issue: Animation is faster than still panels, so it usually takes more than one manga chapter to equal one anime episode. The fact is, there's only so much that can be dragged out in each manga chapter, so fillers are the only way to buy the manga time to get ahead so that the animation doesn't trample the manga into the ground; it's actually necessary for the anime to be somewhat behind the manga—you'd be surprised how fast your "more than 1 years" gets eaten up. Planning for the structures of both the manga and anime takes time, and if you expect halfway decent episodes for later, you'll put up with this. Yes, it's annoying, but it's been worse.

Also, personally, I appreciate how most of the fights don't linger—Dragonball Z was all about fighting and that was boring after a while, and it would be stupid of Naruto to go down that same damn path in some lame copycat attempt. The show has already been criticized for being a too-generic shounen storyline, and you'd like it to be worse? If you want fights, watch DBZ; I'd rather have something that pretends to be a story while preparing for the setup and return of the real story.

My favorite part of the episode was seeing the teamwork between Inoichi, Shikaku, and Chouza during the Sand and Sound invasion of the village. I remember back then I had wanted to see more from that formation. I thought the entire sequence showed the strong connection between the three clans. It also made the current Ino-Shika-Cho realize just how far they still have to go before they reach that level.

Besides the one scene with the Hidden Leaf ninja laughing and celebrating this was another well done episode. The beginning scenes with Ino and Inoichi were awkward. It was interesting to have Kosuke included in this episode. Usually you don't see filler characters appear more than once so I really didn't expect to ever see him again. He's not a bad character so I don't mind it. In my opinion it was nice to see Asuma and the Third Hokage. I know it was only for a short amount of time but I consider any amount of time better than nothing. If I had to venture a guess on what the Third Hokage's message was to Ino-Shika-Cho I'd have to say it was along the lines of "Something just doesn't feel right, keep your guard up."

Episode gets an 8.
