Not too smooth of animation, but okay.

A good portion of frames and scenes were competently on model, but the animation was plain bad. Jerky fluidity and stiff movements ubiquitously filled the episode, derogating from the action sequences severely to the point of sometimes just being distracting. The Road to Sakura filler had much better visuals than this. Luckily, Hong Rong's involvement as an AD ensures that the artwork is satisfactory so it's not terribly subpar. It could've been a lot worse.

Where the episode really shined was in its plot and samurai-ish thematic material. Mifune is a cool character because his abilities employ speedy sword movements to prevent an opponent ninja from ever forming handseals and effectively render their Ninjutsu useless. His conviction-based philosophy and human-sword analogies are appropriately befitting of his title as a samurai, whereas it's especially ironic that the very person who inspired some of Mifune's philosophical views has gone astray in his own convictions over the years. Hanzou's character background was a nice addition - the flashback of his final moments evoked by Pain, the origin of his poison-based abilities and the other flashback of his first encounter with Mifune tied in with the current conflict exquisitely - but our bold samurai leader from the Iron Country was the real star of the show. I still take issue with a couple of things; while I don't have any major beef in terms of Hanzou overcoming his subjugation with sheer willpower alone, it's problematic because A.) it's so seemingly inconsistent with some of the other Edo Tensei characters we know fully well are as strong minded, and B.) its existence negates the usefulness of ET and partially contributes to a one-sided conflict. Horrible animation also tends to interfere with the battle presentation in episodes like these.

Still a fairly pleasing episode overall. I enjoyed all of Kishimoto's references to samurai culture, ranging from stylistic renditions of battoujutsu and iaijutsu to the ritualistic act of seppuku. More importantly, it's refreshing to have a simple clash of blades as opposed to the usual explosions we're accustomed to witnessing in this war.

Aesthetic Rating: 3/5
Story Rating: 4/5
Overall Score: 7/10

Episode was well done. Mifune, although not a ninja and not able to perform jutsu, is a character to like because of his abilities and philosophy. Agreed, animation was not as fluid as it could have been, but because of the story line and the characters involved in this episode, I was able to overlook the animation issues.

7/10

This was a solid episode. Mifune was definitely the star here. I liked the samurai references because it gave a different feel to a ninja oriented series. I always thought the flashback to Mifune and Hanzou's first fight was a good parallel to what was going on in the present. Seeing a fight with blades rather than flashy attacks was a nice change of pace. The clashing philosophies also added a different element. There was more going on here than speed and brute strength. If I remember correctly I was on the fence when it came to liking or disliking Hanzou's defeat when I read this in the manga. I can say now for certain that I am fine with how Hanzou was taken down.

Episode gets an 8.

Poor Kabuto things like edo-tensei never work they way you want it to.Hanzou wasn't the first and wont be the last to break it's hold, just wait and see.Apparently there are different levels of control, and it seems that most that break away from it have had help getting the will power from someone they confront, heart touching moments.Trust me there's more loose ends in one issue of silver age spiderman and hulk comics then all of Naruto so don't get too frustrated with technicalities.
