Tenten!!!! So sweet, so sweet!!!

Very slow but worth it for this team 10 group. Chouji has finally taken his rightful place.

10/10

This was a decent episode. Only complaints animation wasn't the greatest and a few to many flashbacks. I enjoyed all the extra fillers in it with Kakuzu and Asuma fighting random ninjas. That mask of Kakuzu was taken out differently in the manga with Asuma accidentally hitting it with his wind style. Instead having Tenten using the fan on it, which is still pretty cool. And of course Choji getting the butterfly wings at the end overcoming his fears was really badass. Sealing Asuma and then just flying above the battlefield, that was pretty great. Next week looks like better animation. This one gets an 8/10.

Yeah, I agree. The animation went from meh to decent, but the episodes themselves were pretty good and quite emotional.

8/10 for both.

Episodes could have been better if the redundant flashbacks were eliminated. How many times do we need Asuma giving his death speech to those three?? Aside from that, I felt the episodes were touching and well done.

Wasn't looking forward to this episode at all, but am surprised how well it is done. Will leave the second part for the evening.

Chouji doesn't have a lot of awesome moments, but when it does happen, I just can't help but be amazed by him.

He is just plain awesome.

As far as both episodes were concerned, the art and animation fluctuated between mediocre and "Wow, I didn't know Tomizawa Kayano/Eum Ik-Hyun was capable of this". I'll say that the latter almost outweighed the former to a slight degree, so it's actually sort of difficult to pinpoint how much I liked this week's aesthetic department so much as it is easier for me to assert that while it wasn't what I'd consider the greatest, I thought it was decent; I can't even remember the last time Ik-Hyun's team worked on an episode so competently, because there were a few scenes that looked on-model and appropriately animated in 274 as well. Visually, I'm almost impressed.

And whereas I'm already aware of the handful of people disliking the special's overload of flashbacks, I saw them as helping to provide more strength, impact and believability to Chouji's inner turmoil and subsequent transformation into a more confident character, in addition to Asuma's developing relationship with Team 10. Pierrot delivered with some rather exceptional quality here because without the fillers and flashbacks I'm doubtful the special would've been as emotional or touching. The way they conveyed Asuma's sealing at the end of the special was an additionally bittersweet, almost heartbreaking goodbye to his character and role in the series. Aside from the unintentionally comical, somewhat gimpy repeated showing of Asuma's death scene - which in itself wasn't anything significant or major - there was nothing I didn't enjoy story-wise. I'm also incredibly happy they decided to give Kakuzu some screen-time and actually show him escape from the two "chump change" Chuunin as opposed to the manga's neglecting of the whole scene after his binding, which wouldn't have done him any justice at all. Did I mention the fact that Tenten does something worthwhile?

Solid episodes overall. Very nearly 9/10-worthy.

Aesthetic Rating: 3/5 (almost a 4)
Story Rating: 5/5
Overall Score: 8/10

Very enjoyable episodes. As others have noted, the flashbacks were many, but like Lunacy said, I doubt the emotion would have come through as well without them. Because let's remember that Asuma is the only teacher we're really familiar with who's ever died and especially whose students have witnessed it (Kakashi doesn't quite count, particularly because he came back to life). Something like that is traumatic and is frequently relived by the witnesses, and therefore has to be taken into account no matter how tedious it seems.

All in all, a ten from me. The drama can be too much on occasion, but as I prefer drama to action, these episodes were one hundred percent suitable.

The filler material with Asuma fighting those three fodder ninja was a good addition. Those three put up a decent fight. In my opinion the way Asuma took them out was awesome. The scenes with Kakuzu, Darui, Izumo and Kotetsu were very much welcome. Actually I hope to see more with that fight.

I liked the flashback of the spar session between Chouji and Asuma. It gave some perception to what is currently going on. I got a kick out of Asuma saying that Chouji wasn't fat but rather pleasingly plump. There were definitely plenty of flashbacks during these episodes but as others have said they served a purpose. They showed the strong connection between the Yamanaka, Nara and Akimichi Clans. Plus it displayed the inner turmoil and eventual evolution that Chouji was going through.

Overall these two episodes were well done. It was cool to see TenTen take out one of Kakuzu's masks with the fan. I always enjoy seeing characters who don't get a lot of time in the spotlight have an opportunity to shine. Speaking of which Ino put on an excellent showing during these two episodes. Actually she has been impressive during this entire war. Chouji also had a big moment. He doesn't get many but when he does have one it's grand. The last time I remember him having a moment like this was when he fought Jiroubou.

These two episodes get a 9.
